We may have visited the Criminal series in the past with the Legend picks, yet here we are again with
The Last Of The Innocent arc. It honestly feels like the perfect storm of both Brubaker and Phillip's skills as storytellers coming together after five previous tales for this brilliant stand alone story. This book is a huge fave of our's around the store but none more so than our young upstart, Fred "Aussie" Atkins. So tell us what you think, young Fredrick...
Criminal: The Last of the Innocent By Ed Brubaker and Sean Philips
was actually the first Criminal book I read. The fantastic cover of the first
issue was enough to make me buy and the story inside kept it going. The
Criminal series is very easy to get into, all the stories stand on their own
but if you’ve read them all you’ll pick up on a few extra things. The hook is
simple. Riley Richards has a great life in the city, married to a beautiful
woman, an amazing job but he isn’t happy, he can’t seem to forget the life he had in
his home town Brookview.
Ed Brubaker has a great history in crime writing and this
tale showcases some of his very best. The Last of the Innocent cuts between the leads now and as young teens and Brubaker captures both
different times perfectly. Sean Philips also draws in two different styles
throughout the book, a harsh and dark noir style in the current time and a
light fun ‘Archie’ style during the characters teenage years. The difference of
style helps to sell the difference in the characters when comparing them now to
when they were kids.
As I found Last of the Innocent is a great spot to look into
the Criminal series. A compelling story about money, murder, lust and wondering
"what if" Archie married Veronica. If I have said nothing that interests you
about the book so far, just look at the covers, they are more than worth it.
Thank you Fred. So in summary, DO judge this book by it's cover. You definitely won't be disappointed. :D
As always, the ALL STAR LEGEND will
be available for 30 days (or until stock sells out) at the discounted
price. As this will be a limited stock promotion there is strictly "no
holds" on the legend. First in, best read! No further discount applies
to the book as there's a pretty good chance it will already be cheaper
than the US cover price! The discount also only applies to the volume
listed, not the entire series of trades.
If you have any questions, you know where to ask them. You can start to buy the Legend from this Thursday the 6th of February.
All Star Legends. The legendary titles of the highest recommendation.
