FREE COMIC BOOK DAY AT ALL STAR COMICS MELBOURNE DAY DETAILS 2019



One of the biggest and best days of the comic book year is almost here. This Saturday May 4th it's FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 2019 and as with anything the more information you have about the day hopefully the better it will be. 
So here are the details for the day to help make it as fun and enjoyable time out as possible while giving you an idea of what to expect.


OPENING HOURS:
In FCBD’s gone by we try to make a focus on the kids and introducing younger readers into the world of comics. However we’ve found that the hectic nature of the day wasn't always perfectly suited to younger fans and for some can be overwhelming. So to help with this we’ll be continuing our:

FAMILY ONLY FIRST HOUR: 9AM-10AM
The idea is families with kids under 12, will get the chance to get in early while the store is still somewhat more relaxed. Hopefully this we will make younger fans more comfortable, while parents can also grab some free books for themselves without needing to wait in line for ages. This also gives us the chance to get out from behind the counter and take a few more photos with folks if they are after them!


REGULAR TRADING HOURS: 10AM-5PM
After the Family Only First Hour, the store will be open for regular trading to the general public 10am-5pm.

At this time we will have representatives downstairs to let a limited amount of people into the store at once as a way to control the crowds so it makes for an easier browsing experience.


ALL STAR FCBD CHECKLIST
This year in an attempt to help more people get the free comics they want faster we'll also be handing out a Cover Checklist and a Title Checklist of all this year's books to those waiting in line downstairs. While waiting you will have the chance to look over the covers on the Cover Checklist, then mark off the ones you want on the Title Checklist. This will save a massive amount of time when it comes time to get your picks. It will be literally as easy as handing the Title Checklist over and you'll have your books in moments. The lines are long, yes but this will keep them moving faster, getting you your FCBD picks quicker!


We hope you won’t be waiting in line too long but the only way it will move faster is with your help!

The all ages and mature reads tables will be located on the first floor, in front of the vintage toy cabinets, while the KIDS SELECTION table will be found on the ground floor, easily accessible for families next to the front counter.

The All Star Kids Showbag is limited to one per family with kids under 12.
The Showbag contains the listed above 11 TITLES!

Since we only have a limited number of the showbags, to be fair it will only be available to families that come in on the day with kids under 12 with a limit of one showbag per family.

Kids under 12 also get to choose a 1 extra title from the list of Kids Picks as well, which are listed below.

We hope to give everyone at least the choice of 6 to 7 titles. This will change during the day pending stock levels.

Again we can't recommend highly enough that you have the books you are after picked in your mind before getting to the front of the line. Click the links, see what you like and write a list. Thanks again to the incredible folks from 333 Collins St, this year's ALL STAR ARTIST ALLEY will be returning to the stunning and opulent surroundings of the 333 Collins St Walkway. Entry to the Walkway can be found on either Collins St of Flinders Lane and has ramp access on both sides for ease of prams and wheelchairs. It is a beautiful space and we couldn't be more honoured to be able to present to you this stellar group of talented folks on the day!

CHARITY FUND RAISING!


CANCER COUNCIL CHARITY TIP JARS 
AND  FUND RAISING

Paying tribute to the amazing and important work the people at the CANCER COUNCIL do, we'll be collecting donations for them in the form of "Tips" at the All Star Artist Alley.

The sketches are still very much for free but if you care to donate to this worthy cause, helping them continue their extremely important research and services by dropping a few gold coins into the CANCER COUNCIL TIP JARS that would be amazing!


STORE REPRESENTATIVES


Store representatives will be recognisable on the day as anyone sporting one of these lanyards and they will be able to help you with any questions you may have.

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY ALL STAR COSTUME CONTEST :


This year photos for the contest will be taken instore, on the ground floor in front of the New Trade Wall towards the back of the store. Just seek out our photographer and get your photo taken. If he isn't available just speak to someone at the ground floor counter. 

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the store, please be aware that there will likely be some lining up outside at certain points of the day either while waiting to get into the store or waiting for a sketch.

 Please keep in mind that this is Melbourne and cover is limited so we recommend umbrellas just in case, we'll keep our fingers crossed for sunshine. If there are any customers who have special needs, please contact the store before hand and we will do our best to accommodate you as best we can.

That's right, a huge list to pick from and we've got thousands of copies of FREE COMICS to give away!

It's madness and it's wonderful and now we want you to be as prepared as possible to make the best selection of FREE comics for you on the day!

So what titles will be on offer for FREE and what are the store details on the day?

It really helps make the process of waiting for your turn to pick go faster if you arm yourself with the greatest free gift of them all, KNOWLEDGE!

Being the day is family event, about fostering new and younger readers into the world of comics we'll start with the KIDS SELECTION that we'll have on the day.

The All Star Kids Showbag featuring a great choice of kid friendly reads.

The idea of the showbag is to help take the stress out of making the hard decisions from such a wide selection.

We'll also have the Kids Picks, two books to ensure kids still have the fun of picking their own book on the day too.

"HOW MANY COMICS CAN I PICK?"

We normally start the day giving people 6 to 7 picks. This will change during the day pending stock levels.

We strongly recommend that you have an good idea of what titles you want to pick up on the day before you arrive. Click the links, see what you like and write a list. Doing this we can help cut down your time in line and give you more time to look around the store or get a sketch from one of the artists we'll be hosting at our Artist Alley on the day.

Again we'll be handing out a All Star FCBD Check List to the line, along with a guide of all the books covers to help you make and remembering your choices as easy as possible!


PLEASE NOTE: 

Going from FCBD in the past, there most likely will be lines. Possibly a line to first get into the store, then a line once you are in the store for the comics. The day has only gotten bigger and bigger and we will be doing our best to get you your FREE COMICS as quickly as possible. One way you can help is by making a list of the titles you might want to check out and hopefully it will help keep lines moving quickly on the day. Please be mindful that there could be a wait but rest assure there will be something for everyone!

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY ALL STAR COMICS ARTIST ALLEY 2019


Anyone who has attended any of our previous FREE COMIC BOOK DAY events will know we love to use the day not just as an opportunity to introduce new readers to comics but also as a chance to showcase the incredible skills and talents of the local comic creating scene.

Each year we are extremely fortunate enough to host an outstanding line up of local creators, all ready to draw FREE sketches for you, while at the same time giving you the chance to meet and greet the creators and perhaps sample some of their work from our Artist Alley Merch Table!

Once again our Artist Alley line up is so big we've had to move it out of the store to have enough room to host everyone! This year the All Star Artist Alley will be returning to the stunning and opulent surroundings of the 333 Collins St Walkway.

SPECIAL NOTES FOR ARTIST ALLEY ETIQUETTE. PLEASE READ!
-Please keep in mind that when you ask for your sketch that you might need some reference for the artist to draw from, so keep those smart phones handy!

-Please to not take advantage of the artists good and generous nature when getting sketches. Obviously one or two sketches for anyone coming on the day is more than fine but please remember that the event hasn’t been created to grow your original art collection and there will most likely be others there on the day that have yet to get one sketch.

-To assist in moderating the quantity of sketches, any adult attendees of the All Star Free Comic Book Day Artist Alley will be invited to get 2 FREE sketches if they wish, any children attendees are invited to get 3 FREE sketches if they are keen. 

-Also again in the spirit of the day if you are waiting for a sketch and a younger fan is waiting behind you for one too, it would be amazing if you can let them in front of you.

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY ALL STAR COSTUME CONTEST 2019


FREE COMIC BOOK DAY! It's almost here, so it's time to dust off the spandex and get ready to dress in your Saturday Superhero bests! That's right, it's time for cosplay and costumes!


You can't imagine what a buzz it is for us to see the effort people go to dressing up for the day, helping to liven our celebrations. This is our way of saying thank you and a chance to reward all that hard work if you do decide to don a cape or cowl! 
Due to the sheer number of costumed characters on the day we found it best to have an All Ages Division, along with a Kids Division (for entries under 12 years old)!

The rules are simple and the same as previous years:
Anyone in costume can enter. 
Anyone over 12 will be entered in ALL AGES contest, anyone under 12 will be included in our KIDS Contest.
All you need to do is find our in-house photographer, who this year will be taking the costume contest photos instore, on the ground floor in front of the New Release Trade Paperback Wall.
If you can't find our photographer there, just ask for your photo to be taken by someone at the front counter.

Just strike your best character pose and then tag yourself in your photo once we get the pictures up on our Facebook page.

Once you are tagged the public can vote for you along with your friends and family.

The entries with the five highest counts of "likes" at the end of the week after we post the photos up will be our finalists, then a panel of All Star Staff will pick the 3 best costumes!

This year we'll have a $100 All Star Gift Voucher for 1st place, $75 All Star Gift Voucher for 2nd and $50 All Star Gift Voucher for 3rd.

The KIDS contest will have a $50 All Star Gift Voucher for 1st place, $30 All Star Gift Voucher for 2nd place and a $25 All Star Gift Voucher for 3rd place.

Of course we are super keen to see what you guys have planned and can't wait to see you bring some costumed comic justice to the streets of Melbourne while celebrating the best comic event in the world, FREE COMIC BOOK DAY and best of luck to everyone!

New Comics For Wednesday 1st of May



Free Comic Book Day is nearly here and the releases for the Wednesday before it is always a corker. Both Marvel and DC make sure to have their latest, hottest release planned for this week. just take a look below.

From Melbourne writer, Tom Taylor comes a story of DC heroes and villains with a zomberiffic twist in DCEASED #1 (OF 6), with art from Trevor Hairsine. So close to achieving his dream of the Anti-Life equation, Darkseid has made a grievous miscalculation, the cost of which will be the complete annihilation of the DC Universe as a techno-organic virus corrupts all in its wake. An awesome set-up for a story that requires no real background reading, take the plunge and be rewarded with one of the best zombie stories since the Walking Dead.

2019 has surely been one of Conan the Barbarian's biggest years yet, and it's about to get a whole lot bigger as a universe-displaced Conan joins a team of Earth's Mightiest Heroes in SAVAGE AVENGERS #1, from Gerry Duggan and Mike Deodato. Along with Venom, Elektra, Punisher and Wolverine, they'll have lots of new dangers to protect the Earth from. If you're still on the fence, then we have three words for you: Conan vs. Wolverine!

Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman's epic story of fantastical war and destruction in the Marvel Universe continues with WAR OF REALMS #3 (OF 6) WR. Malekith's army has taken the Earth, his factions remaking the continents to match their home realms, from North America becoming New Jotunheim to Ulik the Troll claiming Australia (oh no, they noticed us!). The Avengers are some of the last forces that stand between Malekith and complete domination, and now they truly have to earn their moniker of Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Malekith's forces have conquered the Ten Realms, and their gateway was the corrupted Rainbow Road: the Black Bifrost. To kill their foes prime mode of transportation, Bryan Hill and Leinel Francis Yu give Punisher the lead in WAR OF REALMS STRIKEFORCE DARK ELF REALM #1 WR. With She-Hulk, Blade and Ghost Rider at his side, Frank is going into Svartalfheim and into danger to end the threat of the Black Bifrost once and for all.

This very year not only marks 80 years of Batman. but it also marks 35 years of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, so what better way to celebrate them both than with a third crossover series? Obviously, there is no better way, so that's exactly what James Tynion IV and Freddie Williams II return to bring you with BATMAN TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES III #1 (OF 6), to conclude the trilogy. Our heroes have battled Bane in New York and the Foot Clan in Gotham, but now the endgame arrives, as Krang gets his tentacles on the most dangerous tech in the universe.

Following many great stories coming from DC, the result of many victories for the villains makes this year nothing else but what this book's title promises: DCS YEAR OF THE VILLAIN #1. In this one-shot, from Scott Snyder, Brian Michael Bendis. James Tynion IV, Jim Cheung, Alex Maleev and Leinel Francis Yu, Lex Luthor and his Legion of Doom have teamed up with Cosmic Gods to conquer the multiverse, while Leviathan continues to spread its influence across the Earth, and the Batman Who Laughs is lying in wait with the most nefarious of schemes. Can DC's heroes turn the tables before its too late? All this for only 25 cents US?!

Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson brings back the best team of man's best friend with BEASTS OF BURDEN PRESENCE OF OTHERS #1 (OF 2). New visitors have arrived at Burden Hill, a pair of paranormal investigators, who are poking around a graveyard. Too bad their ineptitude is about to set of a chain of events that spells trouble for the whole town.

From the acclaimed creator of Planetoid, Ken Garing, comes the new, high-fantasy series that starts with GOGOR #1. Under the ground of the floating Altara Islands is where Gogor sleeps, but when the soldiers of Domus start to take over the islands in a coup for dictatorship, young Armano must awaken Gogor to fight and restore the peace.

The finale of Sydney-writer Mat Groom's miniseries, with art from Eduardo Ferigato, arrives at last with SELF MADE #6. In her search for answers about her creation, Amala lost her family. In his thirst for vengeance, Bryce lost his soul. Now they come face-to-face for the last time as they move beyond the walls of the universe.

Since Amazing Spider-Man #1 in 1963, J. Jonah Jameson has done everything he can to make Spider-Man's life a living hell through his newspapers and magazines. So how will Spidey cope when JJJ turns it all around and tries to help him in Nick Spencer and Ryan Ottley's AMAZING SPIDER-MAN BY NICK SPENCER TP VOL 03. But a new foe using old enemies is after Jonah, so can Spidey put aside his animosity of his latest supporter to save him?

One of the best comics from the 1990's gets a new print release with all new extra features, and it's none other than Mark Waid and Alex Ross' seminal KINGDOM COME TP. The age of original heroes is over, and Magog rises to lead a new era, but with this new generation featuring more and more antiheroes, they are wreaking as much havoc as the villains. Which means none other than Superman must come out of retirement and lead the Justice League once again to take back control and restore the peace.

Jeff Lemire returns to his Black Hammer universe, with artist Dave Stewart and their take on the Legion of Superheroes.QUANTUM AGE TP FROM WORLD OF BLACK HAMMER VOL 01, it's thousand years into the future, a new legion of heroes has formed, inspired by the Black Hammer Farm of old, and they're trying to save the world from an authoritarian regime.

Taking place during the first season of the acclaimed TV series, Jody Houser and Stefano Martino tell the story of Will's unseen journey in STRANGER THINGS TP VOL 01 OTHER SIDE. Will Byers is trapped in the Upside Down, and desperate to return home, but when he finds out that a Demogorgon is in there with him, that return home will be far more dangerous than he expects.

If you loved DC Ink's first offering with Mera, then you have to pick up a copy of their second book, UNDER THE MOON A CATWOMAN TALE TP DC INK by Lauren Myracle and Isaac Goodhart. Selina Kyle is surviving a life on the streets, where she tries to escape human cruelty, and yet, to stay alive, she must inflict a little of that same cruelty herself. Will she be able to make peace with herself and regain her humanity?

Dark magic is stirring the DC Universe, and the source of that power is found within none other than Wonder Woman herself! In James Tynion IV's WONDER WOMAN & JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK WITCHING HOUR HC, the witch-goddess of magic, Hecate, will rise once more and will create an army from those with the Witchmark, with Wonder Woman leading the charge. How will the Justice League Dark be able to combat not just an army of magic-fueled soldiers, but one of their own?

With the Death Star and many high-ranking Imperials reduced to stardust, Han Solo feels ready to take his reward and return to his life of smuggling. But that won't be as easy as he thinks in Greg Pak and Chris Sprouse's STAR WARS AOR HAN SOLO #1, when Luke Skywalker, hero of the Rebellion, asks him to do one more mission. Co-starring your favourite Wookie, Chewbacca!

Dan Abnett and Adam Pollina take you to the year 4002, where a cyborg samurai name Rai fights to find his morality once more in FALLEN WORLD #1 (OF 5). While all this going on, Bloodshot also stalks the land, saving the citizens of Earth. Will the samurai and the supersoldier be able to work together? Or will it come to another bloody fight?

A conspiracy thriller mixed with adventure is what awaits you in Stephanie Phillips and Evgeny Bornyakov's DESCENDENT #1. Jackson E. Miller, son of US Senator Carter Miller, has been kidnapped, and the FBI haven't been able to turn up any leads. Fueled by the conspiracy, government corruption, and the music of Prince, David Corey sets out to untangle the complex web of intrigue and deceit to learn the truth at the bottom of it.

Terry Moore returns with another entry in his Terryverse of comics with FIVE YEARS #1, which takes different strands left hanging from previous works and sets to tie them up. Lilith's paper for the formula to the ultimate weapon of mass destruction has been leaked, and now laboratories around the world are trying to complete it, to have the bigger stick. Tambi, along with her team, will set out  to put a stop to the developments.

When they're not being simply awful to each other, three scientific adventurers face strange creatures and the great unknown in Tom Peyer and Fred Harper's HASHTAG DANGER #1. If scientific mishaps aren't enough for you, then be sure to keep reading for the depressing adventures of washed-up comedian, Snelson.

More conspirational adventures await you in NOBODY IS IN CONTROL #1 (OF 4), from Patrick Kindlon and Paul Tucker. After a stranger runs through his yard, resident Richard fears for the man's safety as he runs deeper into the woods. But soon, Richard will have to fear for his own, as the mysterious man drags him into a dangerous web of enigma and unknowns.

From the acclaimed Canadian cartoonist who goes only by the name of Seth, comes a box set two decades in the making as his successful graphic novel gets the deluxe treatment with CLYDE FANS HC BOX SET SLIPCASE EDITION. Telling the story of the Matchcard brothers, Abe and Simon, and how they somehow manage to keep their archaic electric fan store going after air conditioners become the hottest item, there's lots of fun to be had.

Lady Mechanika returns in LADY MECHANIKA TP VOL 05 LA BELLE DAME SANS MERCI, from Joe Benitez, Martin Montiel and many more. As the good lady tries to look more into her past, she must put that quest aside after she becomes concerned by Mr. Lewis' infatuation with a young, beautiful widow with a mysterious past herself, with a trail of bodies a featured aspect.

The miniseries that launched Ahoy Comics finally comes complete in WRONG EARTH TP VOL 01, from Tom Peyer, Paul Constant and more. New Comics For Wednesday 24th of April



It's a week of COUNTDOWNS! 
Free Comic Book Day less than 2 weeks away, the next All Star Comics Women's Comic Book Club Meet Up is coming up this Sunday and then the end of all things with the conclusion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is mid-week! No matter the decade or the city, Dick Tracy will hunt down the most grotesque of criminals and rain down law and order, making the world a safer place.

If you're excited for Dick Tracy Forever, but missed out on IDW's first miniseries, then you're in luck as Mike Allred, Lee Allred and Rich Tommaso's DICK TRACY DEAD OR ALIVE TP hits the shelves. After being too good at his job, again, the upstanding Dick Tracy is booted out of another crime-ridden city. Now, in a new city, with new cohorts, but the same old crime, how will Tracy adapt to his new surroundings?

In 1969, the original Star Trek series came to a premature end, with two years of Enterprise's mission to go where no one had gone before never hitting the television. But 50 years later, Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelley and Stephen Thompson set out to correct that injustice with STAR TREK YEAR FIVE #1, which brings back your favourite Starfleet crew for the last of their original missions.

With lots of ground to cover, this series gets right to what the fans want, going back to the Unification War, to the very battleground where Mal Reynolds' journey begins.

The next digital-first story arc starring Marvel's best private investigator comes to paper with JESSICA JONES MPGN TP PURPLE DAUGHTER, from Kelly Thompson and Mattia De Iulis. When Danielle, Jessica's daughter, comes home with purple skin, Jessica will have to look back at her time with the Purple Man, Zebediah Killgrave, and re-evaluate her marriage to Luke Cage.

By the time we meet John Wick in the film, he's retired and trying to stay away from a world of assassins, but how did he find himself embroiled in that world in the first place? To learn that, you'll have to grab yourself a copy of Greg Pak and Matt Gaudio's JOHN WICK HC VOL 01, as he learns the ropes to becoming a hitman to seek vengeance against groups like the Three Bills and Calamity.

From Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev, the first new series from the Jinxworld imprint comes to trade paperback with SCARLET TP VOL 01. Her life ripped apart by police corruption, Scarlet has decided to finally push back. If the initial action ruined Scarlet's life, then her reaction will be nothing short of devastating for the government and officials of the USA.
  
The breakout character of Marvel's Black Panther finds herself the star of a new series, with the first issues collected for your convenience in SHURI TP VOL 01 SEARCH FOR BLACK PANTHER. With her brother T'Challa, the Black Panther and King of Wakanda, missing, her people turn to Shuri herself, the next heir to the throne of Wakanda. With the revelation of Rogol Zarr's involvement with the destruction of Krypton and his eradication of the Bottle City of Kandor, Supergirl embarks into space in SUPERGIRL TP VOL 01 THE KILLERS OF KRYPTON, from Marc Andreyko, Dan Jurgens, Kevin Maguire, Doc Shaner and many, many more. With nothing more than her wits, powers, a cobbled-together ship and some info from a trusty Green Lantern, Supergirl is in outer space and out for vengeance.

After the senses-shattering volume one of Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman's glorious new Venom run, they're back to put emotions, both yours and Eddie's, through the wringer with VENOM BY DONNY CATES TP VOL 02. The symbiote has parted from Eddie, and now all he has left is the silence of San Francisco to comfort him. But when his estranged father turns up unannounced, he'll have a surprise for Eddie: a little brother he never knew.

One of the modern masters of comic book horror, Cullen Bunn, teams up with artist Adam Gorham to bring you the Valiant universe's resident voodoo priestess her first solo series with PUNK MAMBO #1 (OF 5).
