THE MUMMY DOUBLE PASS GIVEAWAY!

Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

Cruise is joined by a cast including Annabelle Wallis (upcoming King Arthur, television’s Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World) and Courtney B. Vance (TV’s American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson).

Thanks to those well preserved folks at Universal Pictures and The Mummy in cinemas June 8th, we have 5 Double In Season Passes to give away!

To go into the draw for your chance to win all you need to do is comment "My Mummy is great and all but I'd rather see this film with  ______ . " and fill the blank with a tag of the person you think would make a better movie date than your mum and you'll be entered in the draw.

Terms and Conditions:

-Only entries made via the comments on the Facebook post will be included in the draw.
-Entries will be "liked" by All Star to notify the comment have been entered in the draw,
-All entries will go into the All Star Barrel and winners will be drawn at random.
-Entries close 6pm Monday the 5th of June and winners will be announced Tuesday the 6th and notified soon after as to how to collect their tickets.

A huge thanks again to Universal Pictures and The Mummy, in cinemas June 8th

ALL STAR RECOMMENDS FOR MAY 30TH

There is something wrong with Tatiana Davidson's brain.
And I like it.

Several weeks ago, Mitch forwarded me a preview of the Sydney-based comic creator's latest project, Coney's Best Cuts. I thought it was excellent and immediately told Mitch as much. Soon after, I found a copy of Davidson's 2015 work, Black Fish, stuck away for me. It's a nasty little number about a young girl with a rather particular family problem and a weird black fish that seems to be mutating in her garden pond. It's really nicely presented and Davidson's loose cartoon figures and greywash adds impact to the really crazed conclusion. I'm reminded immediately not so much of the old EC gang, who crafted some of the all-time great horror shorts, but rather of those J-Horror Godfathers, Junji Ito and, particularly, Kazuo Umezu.

Umezu's influence seems up front and centre in Coney's Best Cuts and I'd be gobsmacked if Davidson wasn't an Umezz acolyte (Tatiana, if you read this, you *must* get hold of The Drifting Classroom and his Snake Girl stories if you haven't already). This time it's a young boy in the lead, dared by sinister-looking "cool kids" to enter a local slaughterhouse and return with a trophy. Davidson ups the cute factor, just like Umezu,to undercut expectation at what's about to unfold and also ups the body horror significantly to wonderfully grisly effect. Coney's Best Cuts marks a significant evolution in skill and confidence from the already impressive Black Fish. Good horror comics are hard to make. Short ones even harder. Davidson has a gift for them, however, and I'm onboard big time to see where she heads next. I'm not sure if Coney's Best Cuts is officially out yet, (Edit Note : it is) but if offbeat horror stories with nasty climaxes are your bag, pop in store and see for yourself.
Two *big* thumbs up.

COMIC OF THE WEEK : ROUGHNECK
By Jeff Lemire
Published By Gallery 13

New publisher on the block Gallery 13 may seem like some plucky young upstart, but actually is the latest imprint of Simon & Schuster, one of the largest book publishers in the world. I'm not sure who is doing their commissioning, but with a reissue of Bernie Wrightson's Creepshow work already out and now the arrival of Jeff Lemire's Roughneck (Christophe Chaboute's acclaimed Alone was announced but has moved to Dark Horse), they are off to a strong start, displaying a keen eye for reprints and strong original voices alike.

Roughneck is exactly the kind of material I feel Toronto's Jeff Lemire does best. I've seen other reviews call it a "return to form" which seems a little harsh, it's more a return to personal work where the artist can expand his page count unrestrained by the trappings of mainstream genre comics and take the time to build the muscle of characterisation expertly and densely onto the skeleton of a plot.

Don't be fooled by the cover design which vibes Commercial Thriller, unsurprising given just how many prose books of this sort Simon & Schuster crank out every year. Honestly, if Lemire's cover image was a digitally manipulated photograph instead of a moody watercolour, Roughneck could easily slot in right next to the latest blockbuster by the de jour thriller writer of the month. Adding to this, there's even a quote on the back cover calling Lemire "The Stephen King of comics" which is really the most bizarre copy I've seen pasted on a comic book in some time. Thankfully, Lemire once again subverts expectation, constantly (perhaps unconsciously?) messing with the rather tired formula of the modern tough guy/action hero of the popular novel, which, ironically, is perpetuated by his publisher. Violence, the after-effects of sudden fierce outbreaks of life-changing violence, is one of Roughneck's major motifs. There is nothing redemptive or glamorous about violent action in Roughneck. Violence is harsh and ruinous and it echoes on throughout the characters' lives as they try and climb from the wreckage it has made of them.

Derek Oulette, promising hockey career destroyed, now lives in the small Northern Canadian town of Pimitamon. Now a short-order cook by day, Oulette's short fuse sees him brawl through the night and sleeping at the local hockey rink where memories of glories on the ice haunt him. When his estranged sister, Beth, shows up in town, drug addicted and on the run from Wade, her horribly abusive ex-boyfriend, the pair must find the strength to not only overcome their personal demons but also somehow rebuild their family.

Lemire cleverly uses an icy blue/grey wash for the present and rich watercolours for the flashbacks. It’s a technique that delineates quite clearly between the emotional iciness of the present (matched by the freezing surroundings) and the comparative warmth of happier, or at least more personally fulfilling times, right up to the tipping points of violent incident that begin quite different, but equally self-destructive, cycles of violence for each sibling.

The only real addition of colour to the present sequences is that of red - used as the colour of violence, of death, of blood. Wade, when he appears, wears a shirt with red checks. Lemire marks him with the "stain" of violence - a coded warning to beware the man. The danger he presents is signalled. This use of red is a trick that cycles back all the way to start of Lemire's career, Lost Dogs, in which his pugilist protagonist is similarly marked with the stains of violence. It's clever and actually a lot subtler than I've made it sound, and it's another beautiful little trick you can only really get away with in comics.

The moments of violent incident in Roughneck carry as much weight as they do because Lemire invests all his skill and patience into moments of quiet. Pages of characters trudging through snow (with some of the loveliest, inkiest trees I've seen for some time - they almost look like Japanese prints in their brushed inkiness), or simply going through the punishing repetition of the working day, build a sense of emotional isolation and solitude. This is true particularly for Derek, who has put himself in a boozed state of wintery limbo, making his way through days that move as slowly as the fall of a snowflake. Empathy is built for Derek in moments like these, where the waste he's made of his life is palpable.

The conclusion, when it arrives, is perfectly executed and again undercuts both reader expectation and genre convention. Action may drive plots forward, but in Lemire's literate, sensitive works, characters are realistic enough to veer off the path of formulaic resolution in ways that feel both individualistic to them as "humans" and satisfying, on a narrative level, to a reader dealing with fictional constructions. Roughneck is an emotionally rich read, a wonderful example of the importance of quiet in comics and yet another stand-out book by a creator who, even at his best, still feels like he's warming up.

WEBCOMIC OF THE WEEK : PENETRATING RULE
By Connor Willumsen

The supremely talented Connor Willumsen has his latest project, Anti-Gone, due this September from Koyama Press. "Penetrating Rule," created for The Nib, details his experiences working on and eventually quitting a Wolverine Max project several years back. A fascinating peek behind the editorial curtain at Marvel, "Penetrating Rule" centres squarely on just what Willumsen could and could not get away with in depicting a sex scene featuring everyone’s favourite hirsute mutant within the realms of "mature" comics culminating in a pretty pointed argument about the extremes of violence allowed, versus the depictions of sexuality allowed. Really great stuff sketchily-drawn by Willumsen, giving both a sense of urgency to his work and an intimate "diarised" feel. If you're unfamiliar, Google his name to see what he's really capable of artistically.

Warning: Contains Wolverine's hairy butt.

BONUS WEBCOMIC OF THE WEEK : TO SEE WHAT SHE SAW
By Nick Sousanis

See this week's video for below for more on this beautiful tribute comic to academic Maxine Greene by Nick Sousanis, whose book Unflattening needs to be considered utterly essential reading for all and sundry.

COMICS VIDEO OF THE WEEK : CONTINUING A CONVERSATION WITH MAXINE GREENE IN COMICS

Building off the above webcomic tribute to academic Maxine Greene, here's Nick Sousanis explaining just what went in to the creation of his wonderful little comic. Sousanis, one of comics most singular creators, is a source of seemingly never-ending creative inspiration and positivity. Reading "To See What She Saw" (linked above) and watching this video, it's impossible not to see just how important Maxine Greene was to Sousanis' worldview, which is spun with such playful, innovative construction into his comics.

Sousanis is a treasure. One can only imagine just how special someone he holds in such high regard actually was. This is stirring, inspirational stuff, typical of Sousanis, whose Unflattening I again spruik to you as one of the most culturally important comics in decades.

See you next week. Love your comics.

NICOLA SCOTT ORIGINAL WONDER WOMAN ARTWORK CHARITY RAFFLE!

NICOLA SCOTT ORIGINAL WONDER WOMAN ARTWORK CHARITY RAFFLE!

We couldn't be more excited to share with you this latest addition to our Wonder Woman Day celebration.

Thanks to the extremely talented and generous, Nicola Scott we have the esteemed pleasure of giving you the chance to win a original page of Nicola's brilliant artwork from her recent run on Wonder Woman valued at $1200, for the price of a $2 raffle ticket!

The best part is all sales from this raffle will be going to support White Ribbon Australia and their work to end violence against women.

This piece appears in Issue 6, page 20 from the recent critically acclaimed Nicola Scott, Greg Rucka and Liam Sharp run of Wonder Woman.
Nicola's  aspect of the story updated Diana's origin in the most wonderful ways imaginable, taking visual cues from classic Wonder Woman lore throughout her entire history.

We chose this page in particular for a couple of reasons.

One being this is technically the first display of Diana's wondrous strength in this strange new world she finds herself in, that is also tempted with her wise and kind heart.
The other being the look of sheer awe and wonder on the faces of Steve, Etta and Ann in the final panel when faced with Diana's incredible abilities.
This page speaks volumes of  character and is a piece that would look amazing on anyone's wall, Wonder Woman fan or not.

At this time we only have an image of the finished page on hand to display but we can assure you the original will appear in striking pencils and fully inked and without text, showcasing all the finer details of Nicola's stunning line work.

Terms and conditions:

Tickets for the raffle will be available in store for $2.
For those that can't make it into the store or are interstate, tickets can also be purchased via credit card over the phone but only for a minimum purchase of 5 tickets.
For those international, email us at all.star.comics@hotmail.com with the subject line "WW Art Charity Raffle" to organise tickets.

The raffle will run until the end of business on Wonder Woman Day, Saturday the 3rd of June and the winner will be drawn at random and announced the next day.

The art will be only available for pick up from the store or postage arranged at the cost of the winner.

Thank you again to Nicola and her support team, Kate for helping make this happen. We hope you all take this opportunity to win this amazing artwork, while celebrating the legend of Wonder Woman and helping support the good work of White Ribbon Australia.

THE ALL STAR STANDING ORDER LOTTERY

Want the chance to win a $50 All Star Gift Voucher just for picking up your standing order?!
Have we lost our minds? Maybe! Read more and you be the judge.

When you start a ongoing comic standing order with us at All Star, one of the few requirements we ask new customers to agree to is to visit the store at least once a month to purchase the books aside for them.

As we don't ask for deposits or pre-payment from customers, so we feel this is a pretty reasonable request to ensure All Star continues to runs smoothly.

At the same time we also understand that life has a habit of getting in the way of the fun stuff, like heading to the store to grab your weekly, bi-weekly, monthly stash of favourite reads.
Sometimes before you've even finished reading your current stack at home, it's already been longer than a month since we last saw you.
Time gets away from us all...but we believe we've come up with a way to get you back into the store on a more regular basis.

What if we gave you the chance to win a $50 All Star Gift Voucher, just for purchasing all the books currently aside for you?

How does it work?
Simple.
-Each week (starting from Wednesday) we'll draw a name of one Standing Order customer at random to be our All Star Standing Order Lottery Secret Recipient for that week.

-A $50 All Star Gift Voucher will be placed into the Secret Recipient's order and will remain there until close of business the following Tuesday.

-If the Secret Recipient makes it into the store in that week period and picks up everything in their order in that visit,
THEY ARE A WINNER OF A $50 GIFT VOUCHER!

-However, if the Secret Recipient doesn't make it into the store in that week period or doesn't pick up everything in their order during a visit in that time, they miss out on the voucher and a new Secret Recipient will be picked at random for the next week period.

Sounds cool sure but still not enough to get you into the store more often?

HOW ABOUT A JACKPOT LOTTERY?!

-Any week the Gift Voucher goes unclaimed, we'll add a further $10 to the amount.

-Once the Gift Voucher is won, the lottery resets and starts again with a $50 Gift Voucher.

If the Lottery goes unclaimed for one week, jackpot to a $60 Gift Voucher the following week. If the Lottery goes unclaimed the week after that, BOOM ,$70 Gift Voucher and so on.

It's so easy.
It's so awesome.

So the more often you come in to pick up your order, the better your chance will be at winning and not missing out if you are that week's Secret Recipient.
All just as a reward for picking up your comics that you going to do at some point anyway but now we are giving you extra reason to do it more often!

We hope you are as excited for this chance to win this bonus as we are to present it to you.
We can't stress enough the importance of regular the monthly order pick up to help keep the store running smoothly and hopefully this will be fun and exciting way to get you keen to get into the store like clockwork.

ALL STAR RECOMMENDS FOR MAY 16TH

Hi there,

So I was watching The Greasy Strangler the other day and the only thing I could think of throughout the whole bizarre thing was just how much lead actor Sky Elobar really needs to be in a film based on Dan Clowes' Pussey.

Seriously:

COMIC OF THE WEEK : HOSTAGE
By Guy Delisle
Published By Drawn & Quarterly

Fifteen years in the making is Guy Delisle's latest work, Hostage, out now through Canadian publisher Drawn & Quarterly. It's Delisle's first major work that's non-autobiographical in nature and the creative switch up is refreshing. Hostage is the true story of French NGO worker Christophe Andre's harrowing experience being kidnapped and held hostage for several months in Chechnya and in lesser hands Hostage would probably read as a commercial thriller, the kind of thing you'd find in an airport bookshop. However, Delisle strips away all the trappings of a conventional thriller setting his book, largely, inside the confines of a mostly bare room with Christophe chained to a radiator and using the comics mediums strongest tools - chiefly the ability to manipulate time on the page - to breathe an air of authenticity into his book.

Isolation and helplessness are what the reader experiences through Christophe's tale and, entering his headspace, we're given to an honest and frightening portrait of enforced imprisonment. There is immense empathy generated almost immediately by Christophe’s appearance as the everyman - he's presented as just a regular guy, a little paunchy, physically unremarkable and his reliability adds to the realism as does a distinct lack of "action." Far from being a negative, however, the absence of heroic battles and escape attempts (which Christophe fantasises rather absurdly about) allows Delisle a rare opportunity to play with time and space on his stripped-back pages, building tension as days and weeks pass for Christophe in a blur of unchanging sameness and routine, and as he begins to wonder if anyone is coming for him at all.

Delisle interviewed Andre extensively for the book and the artist's spare, minimal lines help immeasurably in conveying the horror of the trapped space. Free to concoct absurd escapist fantasies and ruminate on events playing out in the world beyond the confines of his room, Christophe has nothing but a mattress and his panicked imagination to keep him company. The sparseness Delisle gives Christophe's surroundings adds to the claustrophobic atmosphere incredibly. This minimalism is far from artistic laziness however. Not only are the pages beautiful, but it's a deliberate and clever choice by Delisle to highlight the fact that Christophe is for all intents and purposes in limbo, struggling to keep track of time and to keep himself sane. Delisle is unafraid to spend multi-page sequences depicting little but Christophe staring at the ceiling, the links in his handcuff chain clinking. Crime novelist Andrew Vachss often writes about how much of the art of surviving incarceration is learning the art of waiting and Delisle depicts this wonderfully, stretching time out for the reader over these sequences, building further empathy for his protagonist.

Delisle's ability to play with time is perhaps what's most impressive about Hostage. There's a steady rhythm that Delisle builds over his pages and readers may find themselves speeding through sections as the tension ratchets up or, if disciplined enough, slowing sequences of six-panel pages down to a crawl to experience an elongation of time and the moment such as Christophe must have felt. Further to that, when Delisle needs to break the rhythm he's created, usually in terms of a change in Christophe's thinking, he'll alter his page composition drastically, such as in this sequence where Christophe attempts to halt a mounting panic attack:

Here, the shift in the flow of panels and pages that Delisle builds is instantly shattered - the comics equivalent of a record scratch moment - and such instances throughout the book are marvellously done.

Then there is the relationship between Christophe and his captors. There is an obvious language barrier between both parties and as such Christophe struggles with the motivation for his kidnapping - the endgame is unclear throughout much of the book- but his ability to remain (mostly) cordial throughout the ordeal is remarkable as is his remarkable ability to keep his mind sharp, keeping track of the days and recounting old military history facts to ensure his brain hums through the endless repetition of his days.

Now, I'm aware that all this might just sound a tad dull and if a flawless page of comics construction is, on a technical level, a little dry for you, keep in mind just how skilfully Delisle builds this story to it's flawlessly paced, tension-filled final quarter. Here, at the climax, the creator completely rearranges the quiet, rhythmic panels of earlier sections into pages jam-packed with angular, multi-panelled compositions, mirroring Christophe's anxiety/adrenalin as well as the sudden onrush of movement. Freedom, when it finally comes, is as thrillingly depicted in Hostage as in any kind of drama with a similar premise.

Whether you wish to study Hostage as a first rate piece of comics machinery or as a stirring slice of biography, this is absolutely masterful, artful stuff from Guy Delisle. Read without hesitation.

WEBCOMIC OF THE WEEK : CARRY ME
By Dan Berry

When discussing Dan Berry's 2012 comic, "Carry Me," it becomes impossible to not overload on superlatives so I'm going to cut this short before I'm reaching for a thesaurus. A rare balancing act between the heartbreakingly sad and heartwarmingly sweet, Barry's silent, symbolic comic about death is a thing of real beauty. Lovely watercolours and charming cartooning are only a part of what makes this little comic so special. "Carry Me" is wonderfully yet simply constructed, powerfully emotive, thrilling and yet genuinely tender. Please, please read it. It's truly special.

COMICS VIDEO OF THE WEEK : SKELLY/AGENT 10/TIMELAPSE

Rounding things off this week is Katie Skelly, she of the forthcoming My Pretty Vampire. In this time lapsed video, Skelly belts out a lovely page from her Agent 10 series using nothing more than paper, pencils, pens and a ruler. Super stylish and delightfully lo-fi, there will be more Skelly in this space soon as My Pretty Vampire approaches. Check this out.

See you next week. Love your comics.
